Launched on May 2, 2006, Parlino is a software-based VoIP application which makes it possible to make free phone calls with a PC over the Internet. The software also makes calls to ordinary landline phones or mobiles worldwide. By lauching Parlino, Tele2 claims to be the first major telecom group to directly challenge Skype, using open standard compatible protocols.
To start using Parlino, a software client for Windows XP/Windows 2000 is available to download (a version for Mac is due later). The user opens an account and downloads the free software from the Parlino website. Unlike Skype - which uses a proprietary protocol - the Parlino software is based on the open standards IAX2 (for softphones) and SIP-compatible protocols (for the main infrastructure) to enable better sound quality on both incoming and outgoing calls including international calls to fixed and mobile numbers.
